Medical Issues

Dear Moms, Dads, Gaurdians,
Sending your child away from home is hard enough without having an additional medical condition to worry about. As a parent, I understand and have seen all kinds of kids with various conditions attend Arrowhead Ranch, successfully! If you have any concerns or questions that have gone unanswered or you are still not sure, please contact us right away. We are here for the kids because of the kids. The safety and welfare of our kids visiting camp come first. Our parents who send their students to camp need reassurance, too. Please contact the office and we will get your questions answered and your concerns addressed.

All medications are to be brought up in the original container for both RX and over the counter medications.  Each medication must be given to the teacher in charge or the nurse. The medications will arrive together in one box.  All medications must be placed into a clear baggy with the student?s name, dosage of medication and the school?s name clearly identified on the outside.  When the medications arrive the medic ensures all medications are properly recorded into our medical log. Each medication is notated in the log book including time of dosage.  We offer "med-call" at 8:00 am, 12:30 pm, 5:30 pm and again at 9:00 pm.

Each school district has a different policy for administration of medications while away from home.  If your district requires a doctor?s signature on our form or the district form, it must be done in order for the camp medic to legally distribute the medications.  This includes over the counter medications in most cases.

We, at Arrowhead Ranch, strongly believe that there is no reason a child should miss out on this experience.  As such, we will work with the school and the parents to ensure that any medical issues will be appropriately addressed and handled.  If a child is severely asthmatic, we request that the parent send up two inhalers to ensure that if one gets lost or dropped on the trail we will have a back-up.  If a student needs a nightly breathing treatment, we work together with the family and school to have that done at bedtime so as not to interfere with the children?s daily activities.

FOOD ALLERGIES: Both Arrowhead Ranch and Arrowhead Ranch at Pinecrest are peanut products free.
If your child has a food allergy that is life threatening, please contact your school for more information. If they are unable to get you all the answers, call us, that is what we are here for!

Kids with diabetes are common at camp.  We cannot inject students with insulin as required to keep their levels stable.  However, we will oversee, with a teacher present, as the students inject themselves.   We will keep readings depending upon the protocol sent by the parent or the doctor.  Those readings are kept with the medic at all times.  We will send home a copy for the parent if required.
DIABETES:
If a student cannot self inject, an aid must accompany the minor.
If a student can self inject and requires a log book for the duration of camp a teacher must be instructed in the recording and usage of the book.
All diabetic students will need to have a doctor's protocol sent to camp prior to the arrival of the school.

We have had kids come up in wheel chairs, with arms or legs in casts, and various other traumas.  If a student is wheelchair bound, there is no need to be left behind.  We request that the school contact us to arrange for an assistant to help the student with the daily events.  A doctor?s note is necessary in all cases to ensure that a student?s limitations are respected and known.

In all cases where a child cannot take care of themselves on a day to day schedule, an aid will be requested by Arrowhead Ranch to be provided by the school for the safety and welfare of the student.

If a student is injured during their stay at Arrowhead Ranch, we have a full-time medic who is here to assess the condition and contact the parent. Usually, it is a scrape or scratch that a band-aid can cure after the wound has been cleaned.
In the event there is something more serious, we will contact you and have the student checked out at Mountains Community Hospital, in Lake Arrowhead. The hospital is a full medical/emergency facility. It is located approximately 2 miles from Arrowhead Ranch in Lake Arrowhead and approximately 6 miles from Arrowhead Ranch at Pinecrest. Rest assured that a teacher is always with the injured student and so is the medic. We will keep in constant contact with the parents letting them know any information as we get it. Usually, parents will wait to find out if the student wishes to remain at camp and if it is OK'd by the doctor. At that point parents will make a judgment call based on all the information.
