All medications are to be brought up in the original container for both RX and over the counter medications. All medications must be placed into a clear baggy with the student’s name, dosage of medication and the school’s name clearly identified on the outside. When the medications arrive the medic ensures all meds are properly recorded onto our medical log recording each medication as it is due. We offer med-call at 8:00 am, 12:30 pm, 5:30 pm and again at 9:00 pm.
Each school district has a different policy for administering medications while away from home. If your district requires a doctor’s signature on our form or the district form, it must be done in order for the camp medic to legally distribute the medications. This includes over the counter medications in most cases.
We, at Arrowhead Ranch, strongly believe that there is no reason a child should miss out on this experience. As such, we will work with the school and the parents to ensure that any medical issues will be appropriately addressed and handled. If a child is severely asthmatic, we request that the parent send up two inhalers to ensure that if one gets lost or dropped on the trail we will have a back-up. If a student needs a nightly breathing treatment, we work to have that done at bedtime so as not to interfere with the children’s daily activities.
Kids with diabetes are common at camp. We cannot inject students with insulin as required to keep their levels stable. However, we will oversee, with a teacher present, as the students inject themselves. We will keep readings depending upon the protocol sent by the parent or the doctor. Those readings are kept with the medic at all times. We will send home a copy for the parent if required.
We have had kids come up in wheel chairs, with arms or legs in casts, and various other traumas. If a student is wheelchair bound, there is no need to be left behind. We request that the school contact us to arrange for an assistant to help the student with the daily events. A doctor’s note is necessary in all cases to ensure that a student’s limitations are respected and known. |
